Portland Bike Rides
Mount Tabor Park is one of my favorite Portland recreational bike rides. Of course, Portland has so much great urban riding available, but Mount Tabor is very special.
On Wednesdays Mount Tabor Park is closed to cars. It's a treat to ride here with the pedestrians, skateboarders, joggers, strollers, dogs, and bikes, take over the roads that are usually access roads for cars.
For about 6 weeks every summer, usually starting in June and continuing into July, Wednesday evenings in the park have an added excitement with a weekly criterium bike racing series, "Velo on the Volcano," as it used to be titled. The bike race uses just a part of the park's roads, and all the dirt trails are unused so it is still possible to enjoy the park and watch some great bike racing. Pictured below: the starting area of the Mt. Tabor series with spectators, you can get a glimpse of just how beautiful this park features are in early June.

Mount Tabor has a fun series of dirt trails which can entertain mountain bike riders, runners, walkers, and of course our furry dog companions for a fun day exploring feeling like you really got out of town into a forest but are never too far away from great Portland restaurant offerings and entertainment.
The park is also popular with road bike racers enjoying the hill training, as well as lots of recreational bike riders just enjoying a great view from the top where you get great vistas in all directions (but you might have to navigate to different areas of the park for West view, East view etc.).
And of course, dogs enjoy the park too and there is an off leash dog area.
This Portland City Map shows where the dog park is and provides a map of the whole park.
In addition to the fun trails and car free Wednesdays, Mt. Tabor has a basketball court in an old cinder cone of an extinct volcano, an amphitheater, and covered picnic areas which can be reserved.
In 2024 Portland also opened a new car free multi modal path from SE Division at SE 64 to enter Mt. Tabor Park (it's closer to SE Division than to SE Lincoln, but between these two streets).
